2015 Winner: Handel and Haydn Society’s Bicentennial Anniversary
Mayor Walsh declared March 24 “Handel and Haydn Society Day,” and for good reason. This spring, America’s oldest continuously performing arts organization celebrated 200 years of programming, a long and illustrious legacy that has contributed immeasurably to Boston’s artistic scene. Though Walsh named a single day for the bicentennial, Boston was treated to a whole season of celebrations, including an exhibit at the Boston Public Library and a Symphony Hall performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah, the composer’s epic oratorio that Handel and Haydn premiered in Boston in 1848.
