Shipping containers are finding second lives, providing flexible spaces that chefs, artists and even a barber have made their own. In the past few years, these crates have exhibited art along the Rose Kennedy Greenway, served as a mailroom for the Ink Block apartments and housed a beer garden at Assembly Row. But the Innovation and Design Building upped the ante in the past year with eight containers featuring food faves such as Mei Mei as well as service-oriented spots like Niche Urban Garden Supply and salon pop-up Cut-Splice. And ArtsCommons will soon launch a couple of mobile containers that will house performances, exhibits and more. Shipping up to Boston, indeed.
