2017 Winner: The MIT List Visual Arts Center

MIT’s rep for math and science precedes itself, but its contemporary art museum is world-class too. Dynamic group exhibitions have included An Inventory of Shimmers, featuring major names like Anicka Yi and Sophie Calle, while the List Projects series spotlights emerging artists like Kenneth Tam, who uses Craigslist and Reddit to recruit participants for his discomfiting experiments. The List also manages a permanent collection (including 51 pieces of public art), commissions new works through MIT’s Percent for Art program and oversees a unique student loan program that lends 600 works to students (who get to enjoy infinitely cooler dorm decor than the rest of us did). And thanks to a new program that launched this year, we can take a closer look at the art on tours with specially trained student guides.
