The buzz around electric orange hues started when Pantone named Tangerine Tango their 2012 Color of the Year. Makeup gurus took notice—Sephora partnered with Pantone to highlight the perky pigment in a full collection of powders, polishes, rouges and even lashes. Katrina Hess, owner of Katrina Hess Makeup Studio on Newbury Street, offers tips for making the most of the season’s brightest idea.
Provocative Pout: From sheer glosses to matte lipsticks, a mandarin-colored mouth is the simplest way to incorporate the trend into any makeup routine. “It’s a shade that works for everybody,” says Hess. “But those with fair skin have to go more sheer.” A light orange stain with a pink undertone works well for the fair-faced, and a deep, matte color suits medium to dark skin tones.
Cheeky Charm: “For the fall season, I would do a nude eye and play it up with the cheek color,” says Hess. A light touch is key to pulling off a warm burst of citrus, especially for paler skin. Even redheads can rock this look. “They just have to stick with a pink-coral tone.
Lively Lids: A touch of tangerine shadow brings out hazel undertones in brown eyes and makes blues and greens pop with contrast. Hess suggests blending with cool colors such as gray, dark blue or black and staying away from brown for a subtle look that makes passersby do a double take.
