Henry James and American Painting Exhibit

Often described as a “painterly novelist,” Henry James was greatly influenced by his friendships with American artists. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum explores just how impactful the expatriate’s relationships were in the Henry James and American
Painting exhibit,
which features nearly 50 canvases, manuscripts and letters from Lilla Cabot Perry, John Singer Sargent and other members of James’ circle. Museumgoers peek into the creative exchanges that took place in the artists’
studios, particularly during the 30-year friendship between Gardner and James. Join the party through Jan. 21.
