'Urban Nutracker'

Herr Drosselmeyer as an OG B-boy? Local dance titan Tony Williams’ Urban Nutcracker reinvigorates Tchaikovsky’s beloved holiday ballet, placing the action in downtown Boston, where young Clarice discovers an enchanted world on Christmas Eve. The multicultural performance melds Tchaikovsky’s original score with the music of Duke Ellington, retelling the story through a mix of hip-hop, jazz, tap, flamenco and—new this year—traditional Georgian folk dance by Giorgi & Giorgi, choreographers with Boston’s Mavi Dance, a company dedicated to reviving ancient dance traditions. Get crackin’ when Urban Nutcracker hits John Hancock Hall on Dec. 16-31 (with a special LGBTQ night featuring drag queens on Dec. 29).
