Ingredients: Scotch, Cocchi Americano, Gran Classico

Origins: Scotch isn’t the easiest of spirits to mix with other ingredients, but Ames Street Deli general manager Joe Cammarata was up for the challenge, riffing off the classic Old Pal recipe. “It’s fun to give a single malt drinker, or even someone who hasn’t tried it before, a scotch cocktail,” he says.

Tastes like: “A bitter cream soda Manhattan.”

Pair it with: Chocolate. The pastry display is a short walk from the bar.

Off the chart: The menu is organized as a grid for easy navigation. Cammarata explains, “We have these conversations with every guest: What are you in the mood for? Do you want something citrus, light, bitter? I wanted to get that conversation started on the page before we even come over to say hi. That way we can talk about what’s in your drink and how your day was, not so much navigating to where you want to go.” For example, under “Juniper” and “Taaaht and Tangy,” you’ll find Mr. Owl, a Tootsie Pop-flavored concoction with cranberry-infused bols, Cocchi, cacao and lemon.

Perk up: Though a neighborhood cocktail bar, Ames Street also bills itself as a neighborhood coffeehouse, opening at 7 am—and it’s bottoms up just four hours later. This month, check out workshops that combine its two personalities. On Feb. 16, sample Irish coffees with Grand Ten Distilling; Feb. 23 is all about espresso martinis.
