The buttermilk fried Brussels sprouts at Highland Fried confirm some universal culinary proofs: Add batter. Add bacon. Watch as food is devoured. “Brussels sprouts can be a little—
I don’t want to say bitter, but they’re pretty heavy,” says Mark Romano, who owns the new Cambridge spot and Somerville’s Highland Kitchen with his wife, Marci Joy. “The batter gives it a little tang and crunch.” The restaurant, which opened in December and was home to the original and rebooted East Coast Grill, features a fried chicken and barbecue-focused menu alongside Tiki drinks and eclectic appetizers. This particular one, served with slabs of bacon and a bright lemon juice and horseradish compound butter, is a home run.
