Beer Garden Variety: Lamplighter Brewing Co.

There's more to sample at the Central Flea with Lamplighter Brewing Co.

You never know what treasures you may find at the Central Flea—and, according to Lamplighter Brewing co-founder Cayla Marvil, the same goes for the beers. “We’re always pulling our favorites, trying to bring a huge range of styles. If someone comes and wants something sour, fermented or light, we’ve got it,” she says. “We try not to have a ‘flagship,’ but keep it different and interesting. You’re always going to have something new to try.

There’s definitely more to sample now that the Flea has swapped out monthly events at a paved parking lot for weekly gatherings on a new grassy space at University Park (behind Lafayette Square Fire House in Cambridgeport). And there’s more room for free-flowing fun—like 50 vintage and antiques vendors, 60 artists and 20 fair-trade purveyors—just a few blocks away from Lamplighter’s home base. “A huge component of us starting was to be in Cambridge and be really accessible in the heart of the city. Plus, we always wanted an outdoor facility. Now our commute to the Flea is literally five blocks away,” Marvil says.

Besides the hops-intensive brews that are hugely popular in New England, Lamplighter is also going hyper-local at its covered cargo trailer by offering Bantam cider and coffee from Cambridge’s Longfellows (using Barrington Coffee-roasted beans). All this in a 150-person space that features long standing tables set up with card games and cornhole nearby.
