Where: Gather
Price: $12
Ingredients: Bulleit Rye, Domaine de Canton, lemon juice, mint
Taste: Bartender Moira Toomey punches up a whiskey smash with ginger liqueur, lending touches of spice and sweetness. “There’s a warmness,” she says, “but it’s also refreshing,” making it a fine option during the so-over-winter, not-quite-spring months. Plus, the easygoing taste works for those who aren’t necessarily bourbon drinkers but want to test the waters.
Pair it with: Charred octopus ($14), served with a lemon-garlic aioli.
With a Twist: Sharing digs with District Hall and neighbor to a host of other inventive spaces, Gather looks to its Innovation District surroundings for inspiration. “We try to keep up with the neighborhood,” Toomey says. This means experimenting with creative twists on classics, plus a menu that nods to the nearby ICA with a specialty cocktail that rotates seasonally. (Pro tip: Museum members can score a free appetizer.)
April Rules: Despite record-breaking snowfall, manager Mike Thomas aims to open the patio as scheduled in April. That month can’t come fast enough, with Gather trying out new simple syrups, like blueberry and rosemary, for the warmer weather. In the meantime, guests can also check out the ever-popular Cucumber Cooly ($10), with cucumber vodka, blackberries, lemon and sparkling wine—so smooth you’ll be ordering more than one.
