To make sure I’d done my homework, I tapped Carly Spindel, one-half of the mother-daughter duo behind New York-based “high-end” matchmaking service Janis Spindel Matchmakers (which has locations across the country, including in Boston), for some pro tips for the hapless dater. And while the type of dating this particular single is looking for is far from, well, “high-end,” some of her advice was universal.
1. Make a List Create a list of what you’re looking for in a partner. When you write down your top qualities, you focus better.
2. Stay Informed Knowing what’s going on in the world is essential for those early conversations. Spend a few minutes each day reading the news so you’re up on current events.
3. Put Your Best Foot Forward When you walk into a room, you only have one chance to make a great first impression. Make sure you’re wearing an awesome outfit that makes you look and feel great—confidence is sexy. And don’t forget to smile!
4. Keep an Open Mind Quite often, we’re too quick to judge, deciding someone’s not for us in the first five minutes of meeting. Before you rule someone out, give the person a chance. You’d be amazed at how often people can surprise you.
5. But Trust Your Gut Intuition is a gift from the universe. If you’ve been out with someone and it just doesn’t feel right, trust your feelings. Your inner self knows best.
