More than 200 of Martha’s Vineyard’s A-listers were out in full force for the Morehouse College Legacy of Light reception, held at the Oak Bluffs mansion of former White House cabinet member Dr. Louis Sullivan and his lovely wife, Ginger.
Organized by the Greater Boston Morehouse College Alumni Association, the afternoon began with drinks and mingling on the upper lawn, and continued with a gourmet supper on a tent overlooking the saltwater pond.
Prominent among the crowd: the afternoon’s honoree Charles Ogletree, filmmaker Spike Lee, former U.N. ambassador and mayor of Atlanta Andrew Young, Diddy posse member Derek Watkins (also known as Fonzworth Bentley), the stunning Shamika Baker, tennis addicts Kathy and Richard Taylor, Supreme Judicial Court Justice Kimberly Budd, Morehouse president Harold Martin, writer (and granddaughter of Nat King Cole) Caroline Clark Graves, restaurateur extraordinaire Darryl Settles, Harvard dean Ronald Sullivan, religious leaders Otis Moss Jr. and Otis Moss III, the uber-stylish Andrea Spence, Museum of African American History head Cheis Garrus, prep school muckety muck Mbakwe Okafor, Ethnic Online founder Leonard Webb, banking superhero Robert Clark Williams, Brazilian hottie Joel Gondim, and so on and so forth.
The weather held out despite predictions of rain, and although the rumor that the Obamas might drop by didn’t pan out, it was a highly successful afternoon.
The best remark: When one of the speakers emphasized that this was a fundraiser and asked people to get out their checkbooks, he added, “It’s not called MORE-house for nothing.” ◆
