Determining excellence in film is a complex and confusing business, as everyone saw at the 89th Academy Awards, but the Red Carpet Gala to benefit the Ellie Fund, held at the Fairmont Copley Plaza, went off without a hitch—and with what we’ll wager were way more high-spirited hijinks than at the Dolby Theatre.
On hand to raise money for breast cancer patients while watching Hollywood pat itself on the back were such hip and happening types as founder Jeff Popkin and his sparkling wife, Heidi, the entire Fine clan—Channel 5 GM Bill, the gorgeous Gail (the charity’s head honcha) and their kids, Jeff and Ali—Tom Brady Man Friday Ben Rawitz, squiring the stunning April Soderstrom, fashionisti David Josef, Danny Forrester and Kinda Touma, the dashing Larry Chan, Children’s Hospital beauty Astrid Jeanette Renberg, best-selling author Casey Sherman, Sargent painting come to life Hilary Gabrieli, the sizzling Karen Holmes Ward, bright young things Christina and Ryan Pierce, banking bigwig Joe Campanelli, the dapper and debonair Devin Hill, the dentally dazzling David Pearlstein, man about town Maini Arjun, brunette bombshell Jessica Hennessy, arts booster Ellen Slaby, radio blabbermouth Fast Freddy Murphy, mistress of deliciousness Jody Adams, the radiant Rachael Goldfarb and one couple with small children who, when asked what film would win Best Picture, said, “We have no idea. We’re rooting for Finding Dory.”
The Bob Mackie Award for Sartorial Fabulousness went to glamour bomb Denise Dunbar, wearing a slinky sheath encrusted with 8,500 white opal crystals, 8,500 clear crystals, 3,200 pearls and 180 white silk tassels, with a matching clutch and compact, to boot. Meanwhile, the Joan Crawford Award for Complete Bitchery went to the person who greeted a friend by saying, “I haven’t seen you in 45 pounds.”
