The invitation read “Till the last petal falls,” but so epic was the Storybook Ball to benefit Mass General Hospital for Children, it could’ve just as easily said, “Till the last fella crawls.”
One of the most ballyhooed blowouts on Boston’s social calendar, the black-tie, Beauty and the Beast-themed gala, held at the Castle at Park Plaza, exceeded any and all expectations. To begin with, the room was transformed into a Disney-worthy extravaganza of candlelight and flowers, while the crowd included a Who’s Who of philanthropic Boston, to wit: Fashion avatar Patty Ribakoff and the adoring Charles, the swanlike Alli Achtmeyer and her dapper other half, Bill, blond cutie Ellie Chu and her handsome husband, Brian, brunette stunner Annette Goubeaux, the suspiciously tanned Alyson and Jeff Lindsey, telegenic chef Ming Tsai and his better half, Polly, Beacon Hill beauty Katherine O’Keeffe with debonair main man, Ian, latter-day Lily Pulitzer Remy Stressenger, and so on and so forth.
Guests could play carnival games for designer prizes, while the tables stretching the length of the room added to the drama, as did one woman who said, “Wait! I lost my earring!” only to find it in her decolletage a minute later.
Dinner was superb, and by the time dessert arrived, enough wine had been poured that a singing teapot or a dancing candelabra would have seemed perfectly plausible, if not likely. Also true to the evening’s theme: There was a bit of beastly behavior in the photo booth, but overall, it was an eye-popping evening that raised major moolah.
Overheard in line for the bar: “Is that club soda you’re drinking?”
“Yes. Vodka-flavored club soda.” ◆
