Spring certainly likes to take its time in these parts, but one sure sign that it’s on its way is the return of the nasturtiums to the courtyard of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
This year’s Nasturtium Party (which The Improper was proud to sponsor) was a tribute to the late, great New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham, who never missed a major event at the museum. The cocktail party attracted an impressively A-list crowd, including former director Anne Hawley, fashion plate Elisha Daniels, Beacon Hillion Joanne Dickinson and her daughter-in-law, Sylvia Eaton, radiant redhead Diane McManus Jensen, fashionista extraordinaire Leslee Shupe, dashing literary agent Esmond Harmsworth, MIT mad scientist Coco Montagu and the lovely Kyra, the incomparable Courtney and Michael Forrester, porcelain beauty Trevania Henderson and her other half, John, the flawless Kenlyn Jones, hot ginge Dillon Buss, MassArt bigwig Sondra Grace, mega-benefactors Alli and Bill Achtmeyer, and so on and so forth.
The evening included a killer jazz band in the museum’s dining room and an equally killer fashion show by Project Runway winner Erin Robertson, both of which complemented the incredible
cascades of nasturtium vines that have been hung from the third floor balconies to mark the Easter season since “Mrs. Jack’s” time.
As museum director Peggy Fogelman pointed out, chief horticulturist Stan Kozak deserved a standing ovation, which prompted one attendee to whisper the old joke: “You know what they say? You can lead a horticulture, but you can’t make her think.”
