The Little Hours

Deemed “pure trash” by the Catholic League, The Little Hours embraces condemnable comedy as a not-so-religious romp informed by director Jeff Baena’s college days. Having graduated from NYU with a minor in medieval and renaissance studies, he’s loosely based the film on a tale from 14th-century author Giovanni Boccaccio’s The Decameron. As three nuns (Alison Brie, Kate Micucci and Aubrey Plaza) confess their desires to a servant-in-hiding (Dave Franco)—whose deaf-mute disguise falsely ensures their confidentiality—sodomy, substance abuse and sins galore fill the screen. Say your prayers when the movie gets its area premiere at the Brattle Theatre on July 7-13. / Haley Hill
