A New Brew

Donovan Bailey started homebrewing before he could legally belly up to a bar. Now the rest of us can try his creations with this month’s debut of Down the Road Beer Co., a Newton nanobrewery launching with the light-bodied, citrus-scented Pukwudgie Pale Ale. “Hop-forward pales and session IPAs are really booming,” Bailey explains of his choice in flagship offering, available at stores like Newton’s Marty’s and bars like Charlestown’s Tavern at the End of the World. “I wanted to add my voice to the space with a low-gravity, balanced, but hop-forward beer.” As for that mouthful of a name, it nods to a pint-sized but powerful beastie from Wampanoag lore. “It’s a spirited creature of the forest who entices humans to do its bidding through scent,” adds marketing director Erik Jespersen. “We just couldn’t resist this connection.”
