Castle Island marketing manager Janine Pohorely fell in love with Boston when she enrolled at Emerson College 12 years ago, but she says summer activities for out-of-town visitors can be somewhat lacking compared to other cities.
“There are amazing historical sites,” Pohorely says. “But we decided that we really wanted to bring something special to a space that was underutilized, something engaging and fun.”
Enter the Summer Beer Garden at Underground at Ink Block, a highway underpass connecting the South End and South Boston neighborhoods. Expected to open in mid-summer, the space will be transformed Thursday through Sunday into a hangout for all ages, with non-alcoholic options available in addition to a custom 20-tap trailer. “We’re creating smaller spaces within a large space to give people little moments of their own. We wanted it to be a fun, enjoyable space—not a bar,” she explains.
In addition to 15 communal picnic tables, there’ll be more intimate spots with beanbag chairs and a lounge area. The kid-friendly space is also near a dog park, so pooches are welcome, too. The lineup will showcase Castle Island’s core brews (Candlepin, Keeper, Hi-Def) and some seasonal drinks like fruity sour ales and rotating double IPAs—plus, the summer destination also brings the Norwood brewery a bit closer to its namesake landmark.
Hours: Thu.-Fri., 3-10 pm; Sat.-Sun., 11 am–10 pm
