Wellesley-based interior designers Suzan Kelley of SK Designs and Kristen DiBella of Blue Door Designs recently scored a green monster of a project: transforming a private luxury box at Fenway Park into a baseball-inspired bedroom where the lucky winner of an Airbnb contest would spend the night of the Sept. 2 Red Sox-Yankees game. To accommodate their surprise client, the designers prioritized stylish simplicity over shtick. “We didn’t want to make it some over-the-top man cave,” Kelley says. Here’s how they used modern furnishings and vintage details to create a comfy space that would work in or out of America’s oldest pro ballpark.
1. Something Borrowed: With just 10 days for the job, the duo pulled pieces from their own homes. Beside the bed is a wooden trunk from DiBella’s home; above it, a wood-framed mirror from Kelley’s own foyer.
2. Pretty Pages: Collector-worthy sports books found at the Brimfield Antique Show in Western Mass. were chosen for the fascinating photos on their pages—and for the colorful pops of their bindings.
3. Old and New: Weathered baseballs bought on eBay fill a contemporary glass jar the designers wired as a lamp.
4. If These Walls Could Talk: Autographed World Series pennants and vintage photos of Babe Ruth, Ted Williams and other MVPs speak to the ballpark’s history.
5. Westward Ho: The headboard, bedding, rug and leather club chair all came from West Elm, which has a Boston location steps from Fenway Park.
6. A Stitch in Time: Without time to solicit custom pieces, the designers got creative, hand-painting the words “Green Monster Seats” on the front of this pillow.
7. Looking Sharp: The New York Sideboard from California-based brand Noir “makes the room,” says DiBella, with jagged wood that subtly recalls the look of cracked baseball bats.
