Men’s fashion gets a leg up.

It’s summer, which means it’s time to show a little skin. For men this season, that means showing a little (or a lot!) of leg. One company, Chubbies, exclusively sells men’s shorts with a 5½-inch inseam. For those unfamiliar with gentlemen’s measurements: That’s short. Numerous brands are following suit, so we asked three local experts to weigh in on guy gams, plus more summer trends.

The short-shorts trend: I would say [it’s] good as long as they aren’t too short, and if it’s done right. It’s like any risky fashion trend: there’s a big chance you can get it wrong.

Why it’s back: No other reason other than that clothing comes and goes in cycles. A few years ago long shorts past your knees was the big trend—I think this is probably a backlash to that that’s been a long time coming. Traditionally, for men, the cycles are typically longer than women.

How short is too short: I wouldn’t go beyond a 5-inch inseam unless you’re at the beach.

Pulling them off: First things first: Own it. If you’re going to be nervously tugging at them all day, wondering what folks will think, you’re going to look unconfident. Secondly, make sure your shorts fit well. They shouldn’t be tight, but they should be tailored to the form of your leg.

Other big trends on his radar this summer: I’m a big fan of short-sleeved button down shirts. These have come back in a big way after being reserved for the IT departments of offices for the last decade or so. Best rules to follow with these are to make sure the shirt is well tailored to your body. The sleeves should be on the shorter end so they accentuate your arms—even if you haven’t been hitting the gym.

Trends he’s psyched about: Denim jackets are back! They’re an incredibly versatile piece that can be both rugged and dressed up. They are affordable and can be worn over a shirt and tie, or just a simple white T-shirt.

Trend he’s glad to see die: Camo—that one’s been a long time coming.

Trend that never goes out of style: Sunscreen, for sure. It’s not your typical summer “accessory,” but it’ll keep you from looking like a lobster and having everyone tell you that you’re sunburned. Also, your significant other will appreciate it when you look 10 years younger than your age down the road.

The last word: Keep it simple. I always say it’s easy to dress well as a guy. If you’re just getting into the fashion game, stick to quality basics and focus on the fit. There’s no need to get into wild prints and trends right off the bat. For this summer I would say go with nicely tailored shorts that hit right above the knee, a clean pair of white Converse sneakers and a slim-fitting oxford-cloth button-down or sport-shirt.

The short-shorts trend: It’s a trend that looks flattering on few body types. In all of my years dressing men, I’ve never once heard a guy ask to show more leg. Trends are not must-follow commandments from the fashion gods, so, when looking at any trend, consider what flatters your body and makes you feel completely confident.

Why it’s back: Because all trends are cyclical: even the dubious ones.

How short is too short: An inseam of 7 inches or less.

Pulling them off: Actually pull them off their body entirely. And then pull on a pair of trouser-cut shorts instead.

Other big trends on her radar this summer: Printed-trim polos inspired by the ‘60s; they make a very nice alternative to their brand-logo-emblazoned counterparts.

Trends she’s psyched about: Hybrid summer shoes, like wingtip canvas sneakers. Novelty prints, meaning not plaid, check or stripe. Perforated leather shoes.

Trend she’s glad to see die: Giant cargo pocket shorts. I’m all for utility in fashion, but as a guy you always want the most prominent part of your physique to be your shoulders, not saddlebag thighs.

Trend that never goes out of style: The boat shoe.

The last word: Unlike fall/winter when you can layer up to create a look, summer style is about making the most of the few pieces you are wearing, which means focusing on fit, fabric choice and good accessories.

The short-shorts trend: I like the trend—I’ve always been a fan of shorter shorts. No matter our age, guys’ legs tend to stay fit longer that other body parts. If you can get a shorter fit on most guys, they tend to like it, especially shorter dudes.

Why it’s back: I feel that men are much more body conscious. Shorter shorts just look better. Why not show off a great pair of legs?

How short is too short: Well, let’s just say you don’t want your junk hanging out…

Pulling them off: One tip I use for those that are a bit apprehensive: Purchase a pair that are about 1 to 2 inches above the knee depending on initial comfort level, and you can always cuff them up to make them shorter.

Other big trends on his radar this summer: Tank tops, tank tops, tank tops!

Trends he’s psyched about: Floral prints are still important this year. I’ve chosen to focus our florals on swim. It’s an easier sell. Also: athletic gear. We’ve got a wonderful selection from a particular brand, Shipley & Halmos Athletics.

Trend he’s glad to see die: Crocs! I’m seeing less of them on the streets, thank God. They are meant for gardening and emergency wards. And I suppose they kind of look cute on toddlers.

Trend that never goes out of style: A great pair of Ray-Bans. [Or] a great versatile timepiece. I love a man in a nice watch. Daniel Wellington makes an amazing range of timepieces with interchangeable bands, so you change the look whenever you want. [And we just happen to sell them at Uniform!]

The last word: Keep it chill and simple. Don’t try too hard. It’s summer; have fun with your style choices
