The granddaughter of a seamstress and a leather worker, designer Joelle Jean-Fontaine draws upon her Haitian heritage as inspiration for her Kréyol clothing line. In bold collections for fashion platform Nineteenth Amendment, she reimagines traditional quadrille dresses and riffs on her childhood school uniform with gingham crop tops. The Salem State grad brought her fearless pattern play to New York Fashion Week this year, and this month, she plans to make her summer collection available for purchase at pop-up shops around town.
