Making its world premiere to a packed 300-seat theater in February, this trenchant and timely one-act was penned by acclaimed poet and playwright Claudia Rankine, presented by ArtsEmerson and produced by American Repertory Theater. The drama begins at a dinner party where the hosts—a pair of wealthy white art collectors—clash with their guest of honor, a black artist whose latest project responds to the 2015 church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina. Karen Pittman’s knockout performance anchored the play, which posed incisive questions about privilege and then after the curtain call the conversation continued with facilitated discussions.
