'Cabaret'

“What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play,” Liza Minnelli beckons as nightclub singer Sally Bowles in 1972’s hit musical Cabaret. Adapted from the stage, the film tackles themes of sexuality, anti-Semitism and corruption as Sally and her reserved housemate turned lover Brian Roberts navigate decadent 1931 Berlin during the Nazis’ rise to power. Directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, the film picked up eight Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Minnelli. Get out of your room and head to the Coolidge Corner Theatre when the movie screens as part of the Cinema Jukebox series on June 29. / Noreen Plabutong
