Over the past two years, chiropractor Tori VanNederynen, 31, has completed two Iron Man competitions and is now training for this year’s event in Panama City. “It’s a lot of high intensity and functional movement. There’s a lot of jump rope, sprinting, rowing, squats, pull-ups—several rounds as fast as you can with no stops. You train at a high threshold.” She requires a partner in pain. “Pairing up with people at different levels pushes each individual to go harder, faster. The community-oriented unity of all the groups around here are great, but just for safety purposes, you really shouldn’t go it alone.”

Barring a serious health restriction, she says, anyone can complete an Iron Man course. “It’s just a question of believing yourself when you tell your legs, ‘OK, just 112 miles on the bike after a 2.5 mile swim, and we’re almost done.’ And going for it.”
