New York native Carly Aquilino became the voice of a (more-than-occasionally misguided) generation when she joined MTV’s Girl Code in 2013, dispensing advice on everything from hairstyles and vacations to dating and genitalia. She has since gone on to star in several spinoffs, including this summer’s Guy Code vs. Girl Code on MTV2, as well as headline her own national comedy tour. She helped us crack her code in advance of her stop at Laugh Boston on Dec. 1-3.
What can we expect from your stand-up show? I’ve been on the road doing stand-up for a few years. It’s interesting to see how my material changes as the years go by depending on what I’m going through. Right now I’m talking a lot about my dating life, which is pretty much nonexistent, but, boy, there’s a lot to say about it.
How does your stand-up compare to your work on MTV? There is definitely more freedom in stand-up. I can talk about whatever I feel, and with TV, they give us topics to discuss. They both have their positive aspects, but I like stand-up more because it’s what I first started doing and there is something great about being on stage and feeling energy from an audience.
You must get asked about dating advice all the time. What’s one thing you wish people would figure out already? It’s funny because I am great at giving advice, but terrible at taking my own. I think something every girl struggles with is accepting when a guy isn’t into you. I will tell people this constantly, but if a guy doesn’t answer my text messages, I tell myself he lost his phone or is in jail before I accept that he doesn’t like me. Also, I’ve dated a lot of guys who have been to jail. This could be my problem.
The flirting between you and The Rock is still going strong on Twitter. Do we hear wedding bells? I’m ready to get married whenever he is. Carly “The Rock” Johnson—beautiful.
