With Christmas just around the corner, it’s time for the Weisstronauts – Boston’s self-described “instrumental twang surf psych spy rock” band – to host their 20th annual Holiday Jubilee at the Lizard Lounge on Friday. And the lineup of guests looks appropriately festive with psych-country ace Hayley Thompson-King, blues princess Erin Harpe (in photo) and the Delta Swingers, the Derangers, drummer Jeff Berlin and Red Sox organist Josh Kantor. For a ska-flavored Friday, you could also rock out with New York’s “Jamaican rock ‘n’ roll” outfit the Slackers at the Sinclair.
Saturday’s the big night on a slow pre-Christmas weekend due to the return of eccentric R&B-pop singer Macy Gray and her band at City Winery (you can jump here to my recent interview/preview). Dispatch frontman Chadwick Stokes also brings his solo group to the Paradise Rock Club, while electro-funk fusion outfit Kung Fu jams at the Brighton Music Hall the same night. If you’re looking to relive the ’80s, the largely intact Night Ranger will be happy to rock your Saturday (and surely throw in power ballad “Sister Christian”) at the Cabot in Beverly. And on Sunday, City Winery gives the stage to the reconstituted NRBQ, led by wily keyboardist Terry Adams, who may or not don a Santa’s cap for the occasion.
