Banyan occupies one of the most austerely beautiful dining rooms in the city; it looks even better with weekend daylight streaming through its tall windows. And chef Phillip Tang’s singular Asian-fusion sensibility—reflected in the eye-popping mala heat of spicy pork mapo hash, the hangover-ameliorating comfort of scallion pancakes with lop cheong sausage, shiitake gravy and fried eggs—gives a welcome goosing to the neighborhood’s venerable but sometimes-stale notions of brunch. Finish on a sweet note with beignets kicked up with garam masala sugar.
