Dance Date Night
2017 Winner: José Mateo Ballet Theatre

This isn’t your average night at the ballet, where you’re unlikely to see your date’s face until intermission. Instead, you’ll be seated at cabaret-style tables that share the floor with the dancers, close enough to see muscles flex and hear every footfall echo through the Sanctuary Theatre, aka the Old Cambridge Baptist Church. The moves are as distinct as the intimate setting—this is the only ballet company in New England with a repertory entirely produced by its resident choreographer, José Mateo, who recently received a Commonwealth Award from the Massachusetts Cultural Council in recognition of his 30 years as founder and artistic director. And thanks to a new wine curation program featuring sips from top local somms, you two will have something delicious to drink while watching the dance.
