Thomas Page McBee grapples with what it means to be a man and what it means to be human in his second book, Amateur: A True Story About What Makes a Man. The Emerson grad speaks candidly about his experience as a trans man navigating the hypermasculine space of a boxing ring after signing up to fight for Haymakers for Hope, a charity that hosts amateur matches to raise money for cancer. Despite his history of male-based childhood violence, McBee uncovers the vulnerability and emotion behind boxing and learns how to exist in a formerly uncomfortable space.
