Brodsky/Baryshnikov

Fusing poetry and movement, Brodsky/Baryshnikov is a multi-layered translation and a letter to a lost loved one, starring ballet icon Mikhail Baryshnikov performing the works of the late Nobel laureate Joseph Brodsky. Performed in Russian with English surtitles across the top of the set’s weathered glass solarium-type room, this theatrical piece celebrates the haunting work of the poet, who immigrated to America in the 1970s after he was imprisoned and eventually exiled from his native Russia because his poetry was deemed “anti-Soviet.” Baryshnikov balances stillness and motion—at times reading from a book standing in stark light, other times twisting his body in time with a recording of Brodsky reading his own work.
