Giovanni DeCunto

At just 12 years old, Giovanni DeCunto sold his first painting: a copy of Rembrandt’s The Man with the Golden Helmet. He’s looking to the Dutch artist once again in 13, his interpretations of the 13 works of art stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990. Take in his abstract impressionist spin on the estimated half-billion dollars worth of lost masterpieces, which also included century-old works by Degas, Manet and Vermeer. The Lawrence-bred DeCunto—whose work hangs everywhere from the National Portrait Gallery to the Country Music Hall of Fame—spent his formative years studying many of these same pieces at Boston University, leading to this homage that uses his own method of manipulating acrylic paint with his hands. Brush up on your art history at DeCunto’s gallery through March 17. / Julia Aparicio
