As you celebrate Boston Pride at parties in town this month, make sure to save an evening to catch Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Both an empowering story of self-acceptance and a kick-ass rock musical, the Tony Award-winning hit follows Hedwig, an East German genderqueer singer in a struggling rock band. During a gig, she traces her life from a misunderstood youth through a botched gender reassignment surgery, ill-fated romances and her reinvention as an “internationally ignored” rock star. Backed by a score influenced by the likes of Bowie, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop, Hedwig owns the stage through June 11 at the Boch Shubert Theatre.
