In the Heat of the Night

Racial tensions come to a boil in In the Heat of the Night, Norman Jewison’s 1967 drama about a black police detective from Philadelphia (Sidney Poitier) who teams up with a bigoted police chief to search for a killer in a small Southern town—that is, after being falsely accused of the crime himself. The winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture a half-century ago, it spawned two sequels and a TV show. Catch the classic at the Museum of Fine Arts on Aug. 11 when it kicks off Feed Your Head: Films from 1967, a series of screenings that coincide with the groovy new exhibit The Summer of Love. / Courtney Garvey
