Sally Mann

Sally Mann has gained plenty of accolades during her 40-year photography career, but she’s never had an international traveling exhibit of her work until now. Before shadowing in Paris next year, A Thousand Crossings will fill the Peabody Essex Museum with 115 images from the woman who was once named “America’s Best Photographer” by Time magazine. Including some previously unpublished photos, the collection portrays Mann’s vision of the South while exploring themes on family, the land, racism and mortality. Grappling with a region and its people and places that were torn apart by racism and violence, the pictures capture scenes ranging from her three kids playing near a remote cabin in Virginia (Easter Dress, pictures) to photographs of Civil War battlefields. / Nicole Rodger
