SpeakEasy Stage Company’s Men on Boats

There are no men and there are no boats on stage for SpeakEasy Stage Company’s Men on Boats, and that’s entirely the point of Jaclyn Backhaus’ subversive play. Based on geologist John Wesley Powell’s journals chronicling his 1869 expedition along the Colorado River, the play comments on historical memory and replaces the male explorers with a gender-bending cast. Along the way, the ensemble encounters Native Americans, faces off with a snake and deals with choppy waters. Drop anchor and head to the BCA’s Calderwood Pavilion through Oct. 7. / Matt Martinelli
