Wide Shot

When Christopher Nolan shot Dunkirk, he used 70mm film, eschewing today’s go-to digital style. And he’s not alone: Film auteurs from Quentin Tarantino to P.T. Anderson have released films on 70mm film this decade. Somerville Theatre is feting the old-fashioned format with its second annual 70mm and Widescreen Festival, which will pack 17 screenings into 12 days in its main theater. Catch what’s considered a better cinematic experience—in sharpness and richness of color—than 4k digital when the theater screens classics from the past 60 years such as Cleopatra, Lawrence of Arabia (right) and Top Gun. Keep your eyes wide open and enjoy the nearly two weeks of screenings at the Somerville Theatre starting Sept. 20. / Matt Martinelli

The 70mm and Widescreen Festival runs Sept. 20-Oct. 1 at the Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Square, Somerville. $15; $12, seniors; $10-$12, matinees. somervilletheatre.com.
