Out of the Kitchen

Though she says it still makes her nervous, Top Chef winner Kristen Kish is heading back to television. This time, Menton’s former chef de cuisine is co-hosting 36 Hours, a six-episode Travel Channel series inspired by the New York Times column of the same name. Joined by co-host Kyle Martino, a former MLS player, she tours Berlin, Istanbul, Barcelona, Nashville, Portland and Boston—where Kish admits she discovered new experiences despite having lived here for nearly 10 years. “My wonderment is truly authentic and every surprise, and even disappointments, with different things will come through,” Kish explains. “I hope it’s as entertaining and exciting for the viewer to watch as it is for me to live.” In advance of the show’s Aug. 17 premiere, we asked Kish to dish out a 36-hour slice of her own life.

Friday

3 pm: Pick up my girlfriend from work, stopping at Jugos by Back Bay Station for a fresh juice. It makes me feel healthy alongside my diet of fried chicken fingers and pizza.

4:15 pm: Walk over to the South End, stopping at the Butcher Shop on our way home. Stop at Siena Farms to pick up produce for dinner, choosing whatever hits me at that moment. … I’ve recently been on a kick of summer squash, peppers and greens.

5:30 pm: Relax while intermittently checking emails for any last-minute trip details. Prep and cook dinner.

8 pm: Pack way too many suitcases full of clothes that aren’t mine (for filming) and way too many shoes—knowing I will only wear two of them.

9 pm: Catch up on our few television obsessions, check more emails, scroll Instagram, do some social media damage, all while convincing myself I need to go to bed.

11 pm: Nightly bedtime routine: Stare at the ceiling hoping to fall asleep, check my alarms a million times.

Saturday

6 am: Before my eyes are fully opened, my phone is in my hand checking and responding to emails and texts that I missed in the middle of the night. Coffee, coffee, coffee, water, then more coffee. Once the caffeine kicks in, I’m on my computer doing work—working on my book, writing menus, catching up on life after being away the weeks prior. … Did I pay the electric bill? Or buy toilet paper?

8:30 am: Walk to the gym, work out, walk home.

11 am: Shower, check in for my flight, get organized.

1 pm: Airport adventures: mainly waiting at Logan and buying so many packs of gum and snacks.

3 pm: Air time is great for writing and doing any work that can be done from my computer—it’s really the best office.

11 pm: Arrive in Berlin. Once I grab dinner, usually room service or somewhere near the hotel, I say hi to Kyle somewhere along the way and meet with our field producer to go over the filming schedule, wardrobe and all the details I need to start the week of filming. Make phone calls to Mom and Dad letting them know I’ve made it safely.
