Craft & Caro spruces up a stale morning routine.

For any man, the battle against the alarm clock is never ending. Every extra minute of sleep counts, and since late nights are exponentially more fun than early mornings, bathroom shortcuts that allow you to hit snooze are always welcome—which is why I reached out to Anthony Caro. The founder and chief purveyor of Craft & Caro, this year’s winner of Boston’s Best Men’s Accessories, explains how some changes in products and accessories can streamline your morning routine.

Sometimes, it’s the familiarity of the routine that bogs men down. “People, I think, can have a tendency to wash their hair more than is necessary,” Caro says. With daily shampooing, he explains, there’s a chance of drying out the scalp and forcing the body to overproduce its natural oils, prompting men to overcompensate with even more products and extending time in front of a mirror. Refraining from the lather, rinse, and repeat life every now and again, as well as using natural products instead of synthetics, can calm your internal oil factory and save a few minutes.

Beard oil is one versatile item Caro stresses, specifically the Brothers Artisan Oil ($22). Useful far beyond its namesake, it can serve as a hair product and skin moisturizer. And a little goes a long way. Caro suggests putting a few drops in your palm and then rubbing it directly onto your head right out of the shower. “If I have a little left on my hands, I’ll even put it on my elbows and knees, because it’s going to add moisture pretty much wherever you put it,” Caro says. Another helpful product is the Brickell’s restoring eye balm ($40) for a recharged look after a long night.

Keeping yourself fresh after locking your front door is also necessary throughout the day. Beyond stocking the necessities—toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant—in your desk at the office, Caro suggests investing in a manicure kit ($83-$162), which is less for keeping your fingers pristine but your clothes and facial hair on point. You can pluck a stray eyebrow hair with the tweezers or cut a loose thread on your shirt with the small scissors. A Kent clothes brush ($40), to clean up any lint or spills while on the go, can also help you out of a jam.

You can put it in your pocket or throw it in your briefcase,” Caro says. “If you’re really discreet, people won’t even know that you’re applying a fragrance, you just touch your finger to the wax and apply it to your fragrance points.” Postponing some morning staples to later on in the day can grant men more precious time under the covers. / Andrew Elmers
