Strap On

When we stumbled across a Kickstarter for a product called Rousers early this December, we weren’t sure if we were amused, turned on or…confused. Branded as “overalls for the modern urban man,” Rousers are just that: utilitarian overalls in various monochrome shades, modeled by a host of chiseled dudes going about their modern urban lives—catching a train, playing football, strolling in the park or grabbing a drink at the bar. The brainchild of Matt Jorgensen and Ben Waller, two friends who began playing around with designs for Rousers in their Boston apartment early last year, Rousers’ Kickstarter page raised $30,912 of their $25,000 goal. So, it seems these guys might be onto something. Now available for pre-order for $99 (a deal when you consider all the extra pocket space!), the overalls started production this month. To herald the year of men in suspendered trousers (you saw it here first), we did a little digging to recall some famous gentlemen who rocked the ’alls way back when.

Super Mario Bros.: Mario and Luigi were two bros who understood that, when it came to saving princesses and battling Bowser, functionality is just as important as fashion.

The dad in Grant Wood’s American Gothic: The original gentleman farmer! Is that a pitchfork in your hand, or are you just happy to see us?

*NSYNC: Long before he was hanging with Jay Z and making an honest woman out of Jessica Biel, Justin Timberlake was hanging with his boy band homies… in light-wash overalls, immortalized for eternity in the pages of teen magazines and Google image searches. Never forget.

Backstreet Boys: Well, A.J. specifically—with nothing but a wifebeater and a smile. And a furry white Kangol hat. Try to forget.

Marky Mark: One strap, a gazillion muscles.
