Under the Leather

From the Ramones’ trademark Perfecto getups to Sid Vicious’ signature Schott gear, the leather jacket has long been a go-to for music legends. Now three Northeastern grad students—Robin Yang, Alfred Lam and Kent Tsai—are reimagining classic rock threads with Pretty Vacant, a Boston-based line offering lightweight lambskin leather jackets starting at a cool $550.

“We were trying to make what we wanted to buy,” Yang says of the trio, who started sketching on a dorm room floor in December 2014. They’ve since released several styles for men, and ladies can get in on the action come April, when a cropped motorcycle jacket debuts. The brand’s name—taken from the Sex Pistols’ 1977 single—isn’t the only musical cue: Yang has picked Berklee students off the streets as models for their designs. “When they put it on, the jacket belongs to them,” he says. “It’s part of their body.”
