DON’T FORGET TO CHECK OUT THE REST OF OUR SPRING PREVIEW!
Before Serial debuted in 2014, This American Life staffers Julie Snyder and Sarah Koenig expected to attract the grad school crowd with their exploration of a 15-year-old murder case—but ended up with the world’s most popular podcast. Now in the midst of a second season about soldier Bowe Bergdahl, the co-creators are headlining a Binge-Worthy Journalism tour heading to Symphony Hall on March 30 for a show presented by Celebrity Series of Boston. Snyder gave us a sneak peek.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR TOUR? We play some behind-the-scenes tape and clips from the show…tell funny stories about things that have happened along the way, and then I talk a little bit more in-depth about narrative journalism. … I feel like it’s a little more fun than you might imagine. I think we have a little bit of a more dour and more serious persona on the podcast than we actually have. So we’re definitely setting out to entertain.
WHEN DID YOU REALIZE SERIAL HAD BECOME SUCH A HIT? The most surprising thing for me was when I started realizing that there were other podcasts about our podcast. … I was like, “What is happening?”
HOW HAS IT BEEN TAKING A BREAK FROM THIS AMERICAN LIFE? I used to never listen to the show, only if I happened to be in the car while it was broadcasting. Otherwise, though, I never went back and listened to the podcast. So now I haven’t been doing anything on the show for over a year, so it’s really fun [to listen to]. I feel like I get to experience it as a civilian.
FAVORITE OFF-THE-CLOCK PODCASTS? I’m a little vanilla in my podcast taste—I’m a solid public-radio listener in a lot of ways. So my go-to always, I just go to Fresh Air first, and then I really love, when they’re in season, the StartUp podcast, and Reply All. … Also, I have to admit, I listen to a lot of Howard Stern.
