2014 Winner: Samsøn

Samsøn Projects turned 10 this year, but its South End art space still operates like a boundary-busting upstart. Owner Camilo Alvarez offers platforms to relatively unknown up-and-comers and fresh looks at established artists through multimedia exhibits, live performances and participatory events. Unique artist-in-residence program sübSamsøn invites artists to work in the gallery’s basement studio for six-month stints. Always a hot destination during First Fridays, the space can often feel more like a hip downtown party than an art gallery—that’s a good thing.
