2016 Winner: Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe

A legendary icon of Boston dining, Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe opened in 1927, winning fame for slinging tasty turkey hash and welcoming blacks in the era of segregation. South Enders died a little inside when it closed in 2014. But this past winter, local restaurateur Evan Deluty refurbished and reopened the ancient diner, bringing back most of the old menu, the glorious photographs and treasured staffers like 40-year-plus veteran Marie Fuller, thereby resuscitating a vital piece of the neighborhood’s soul.
