Question: How many Bostonians can you fit into the lobby of Miami’s Sagamore Hotel? Answer: A lot, even when said lobby is also packed to the rafters with scantily clad mannequins as part of an exhibit entitled “Lingerie Française.” The occasion was the opening of the annual art fair/social circus known as Art Basel, and the Museum of Fine Arts, the Institute of Contemporary Art and MIT’s List Visual Arts Center joined forces to throw a cocktail party of epic proportions, where artists, curators, dealers and collectors mingled with people who just like to have a good time.
The stark white interior, punctuated by contemporary art and sexy undies, attracted the likes of List head honcho Paul Ha, MFA grand poobah Matthew Teitelbaum, ICA muckety muck Eva Respini, provocateur Geoff Hargadon, the pixieish Jody Vipperman Saarmaa and her adoring husband, Erik, uber-collectors Ann and Graham Gund, gallery owners Richard Baiano and Stephanie Bond, dealers Camilo Alvarez and Abigail Ross Goodman, Nasher Museum of Art bigwig Stephanie Wheatley, the ubiquitous Janet Wu, ArtLifting’s Natalie Lemle, the flawlessly chic Karen Rotenberg with her distinguished other half, Michael, and countless other arts enthusiasts, who sipped wine and wandered through the hotel, which was also decorated with its owner’s impressive contemporary art collection. Everyone compared notes on which tents they planned to hit and where they had restaurant reservations while slyly snickering about the fact that it was rainy and cold back in Boston.
“That’s my kinda art,” leered one man, referring to a see-through peignoir, to which his wife replied, “Well, if you’d turn the heat up at home, I could wear that instead of a flannel nightgown.”
Meanwhile, the evening’s most amusing comment: “If I do have baggage, you can rest assured it’s Louis Vuitton.”
