Having Johnny Depp appear in full Captain Jack Sparrow regalia is about the only thing that could have improved upon Opening Night of Boston Ballet’s new season.
The premiere of Le Corsaire began with a cocktail reception at the Opera House, followed by the performance, which was grog to anyone who fetishizes pirates (like me). Seen walking the plank: Pakistani princess Sophia Ali, the intimidatingly gorgeous Andrea and John Osbon, the perfectly coiffed Linda Shapiro Waintrup and her affable other half, Dan, dashing do-gooder Freddie Martignetti, Sister of Perpetual Naughtiness Mary English, power couple Steve Weiner and Don Cornuet, the ever-elegant Ruth Littlechild and her debonair husband, John, Midwestern beauty Diane Schmalensee, banking bigwig Alison Quirk, gorgeous Iranian painter Susie Gheyssari, the ethereal Susan Richardson, petite pixie Lisa Blumenthal with her bespectacled hipster, Tom, and one woman who described the performance as a “Rudolph Valentino movie meets ballet.”
After the performance, there was dinner and dancing at the Ritz-Carlton, where one guest marveled at the fact that dancers who had just been on stage for two hours still wanted to get down.
The evening’s most honest remark: “Excuse me, but there’s a really rich guy I gotta go talk to.”
