The hot beef sandwich at American Provisions’ new Dorchester spot was a happy accident. Unlike the griddled roast beef, caramelized onions, pepper jack cheese and housemade buttermilk dressing, the crunchy jalapeño chips weren’t part of the original plan. “We were gonna do sour cream and onion chips, but I grabbed the wrong bag,” says general manager Kara Chadbourne, who was on her way to test the recipe ahead of the February opening of the shop—which boasts a full kitchen, unlike its Southie sibling. “We tried the jalapeño anyway, and the spice ended up working really well.” You’ll be thankful for the gourmet goof—which you won’t find at the East Broadway location—after a bite of this cheesy decadence with a bit of heat.
