Since its July opening, Mario’s Pizzeria has been a word-of-mouth secret for New York-style pies with a Portuguese twist. Mario Bailote served plenty of slices after emigrating from the Algarve nearly 30 years ago, but the Roxbury storefront is the first that he and partner Rebecca Greening have opened. The pair also offer house specialties such as the bifana sandwich, which taps his mother’s recipe to marinate thinly sliced pork in white wine, fresh garlic and dried bay leaves before simmering with onions. Served on a Portuguese roll with mustard and imported piri-piri hot sauce, the street-eat-inspired bite calls for a couple of cold ones while enjoying it at home.
