The new Sunday brunch menu at Tiger Mama hits you with an existential question: Savory or sweet? “For me, brunch is a combination of savory, interesting, dynamic flavors, and also classics,” says Tiffani Faison, chef/owner of the Southeast Asian-inspired hot spot and the neighboring Sweet Cheeks Q. The menu of your hangover dreams features Tiger Mama favorites, alongside new dishes that sing with Faison’s crazy creative twists. Take the Boons bread French toast ($11), a decadent mashup of bread pudding and griddled French toast that’s topped with a white chocolate, pistachio and kaffir lime crumble and a bruleed coconut cream. “The whole thing is ooey-gooey with crunchy parts on the bread,” Faison says.
Though she flirts with the sweet side with these latest offerings—like the sublime stacks of enormous pancakes whipped up by pastry chef Deanne Steffen Chinn—consider Faison on Team Savory when it’s time for her own order. When it came to the roti-rito ($13), she says, “We wanted something that felt brunchy and satisfying and kind of exuberant.” This chana masala take on the brunch burrito features crispy roti flatbread stuffed with curried chickpeas in a tomato sauce and garlicky wok-braised greens that’s then topped with mint cilantro, cucumber garlic raita and tomato onion chutney. The dish is layered, earthy and hearty enough to win-over the most die-hard carnivores, with the just-right amount of crunch from the roti.
