In November, Mission Hill mainstay Penguin Pizza welcomed sister eatery Grub, set just across Huntington Avenue and specializing in original versions of Quebecois poutine. “We kind of wanted to do our own spin,” general manager Keith Patrick says of the dish traditionally made with fries, cheese curds and gravy. One standout is the Smokey Bear, which piles pulled pork and smoked gouda on a bed of fries before topping it all with hickory-smoked maple syrup. Salty and sweet with subtle notes of campfire, it’s a dish meant to warm diners right up. Says Patrick: “It’s a good way to survive the winter.”
